Antoni Clavé (1913-2005)

Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, stage and costume designer.

Costume designs for the ballet Carmen:
Renée [Zizi] Jeanmaire as Carmen and Roland Petit as Don Jose - for Les Ballets de Paris de Roland Petit, 1949. Clavé designed both the scenery and costumes; apparently it is the only ballet he designed for Roland Petit.

India ink, pen and brush, heightened with white tempera or gouache - on paper.
27 x 29 cm; 10.6 x 11.4 ins - signed: Clavé.

Clavé used the heightening as a means of correcting small aras of his drawing. While the paper yellowed slightly since the artist produced the drawing, the highlighting has not yellowed and stands in slight contrast to the paper.

Viewing the drawing personally is recommended. Provenance available.
