Draped graphically appealing patchwork quilt, believed to be North American (USA), dating from second half 19th century, entirely hand-pieced, home-dyed carmine red and eggshell-coloured homespun cotton. It is most unusual, as the artist did not follow one particular pattern as was customary, but instead incorporated three different quilt blocks - 'Hexagon Mosaic', 'Zig Zag' and 'Pinwheel on Point'. Backing consist of an entire loom width of fabric, same eggshell-coloured cotton as used on front. Patchwork Quilt

This graphically stark quilt is believed to be North American (USA). It is entirely hand-pieced of home-dyed radiant carmine red and eggshell-coloured homespun cotton, or a cotton-linen combination, dating from the second half of the 19th century. Its great appeal rests in the artist's choice of two colours only rather than following a multi-coloured pattern as was customary, but instead incorporating three different quilt blocks - Hexagon Mosaic, Pinwheel on Point and Zig-Zag. The backing consist of an entire loom width of fabric, the same eggshell-coloured one as used on the front. Dimensions: 222cm x 252cm (88ins x 99ins). The quilt is extremely well preserved.

Sections showing the three different quilt blocks: Hexagon Mosaic, Pinwheel on Point, Zig-Zag (left).
